Renters' Rights During COVID-19

For those who are struggling to pay rent during the COVID-19 pandemic, The San Diego Housing Commission has created a page on their website dedicated to providing real-time, accurate information about new rights signed into law for renters in California.

For example, on March 25, 2020, the San Diego City Council adopted a short-term ban on evictions in San Diego County related to COVID-19. This means that tenants who cannot pay rent due on or after March 12, 2020 because of financial hardships caused by COVID-19, landlords cannot evict them. This temporary eviction ban lasts until May 31, 2020, unless extended by the City Council.

For additional financial help such as eligibility for unemployment insurance, paid family leave, disability insurance, and relief from financial institution, learn more about the California Corona Virus (COVID-19) Response here (also updated regularly).

We will continue to update you as more agencies join in on this initiative.
