What Does Health Literacy Mean to You?



The Institute of Medicine Report defines health literacy as the degree to which an individual has the capacity to obtain, communicate, process, and understand basic health information and services in order to make appropriate health decisions (IOM,2004).


In the ever-changing and complex healthcare world, the emphasis of health literacy is vital as it breaks down literacy barriers to improve health communication and shared, informed decision-making between healthcare providers and patients.
